Samrec - (South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Center)
The main bird species that are supported is the African penguin, an endangered species of bird native to the South African and Namibian coasts. The goal is to help protect these endangered species and increase the population.
It is estimated that over the past 50 years, the African penguin population has declined by 91%. It is estimated that 45,000 penguins remain. Researchers have predicted that this species will be extinct in the wild by 2025 ... Samrec offers an educational program that introduces schools, tourists and other interested parties to the work of Samrec.
It addresses the problems of threatened and rare species and the effects of climate change, including pollution and overfishing on marine ecosystems
The main goal is to rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured seabirds, especially the endangered African penguin.
Entrance fee:
R 20 (approx. € 1.40) for children
R 30 (approx. 2.00) for adults
Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tours take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
At 2.30 p.m. it is feeding time

Bay World Oceanum & Museum
By European standards, the Oceanum is not exactly "up-to-date" ... But the attached museum is really worth a visit. Our children (8 and 10 years old) like the museum. Much is on display about the history of Port Elizabeth and the sea.
The museum is definitely worth a visit (even if the weather is bad).
